What Should the Celtics Do?
Can the 2020–21 Season Be Salvaged?
The Celtics really miss having someone like Gordon Hayward on the floor. Someone who’s not a ball-stopper.
They’re not getting Hayward back. So… my proposed trade. Bring back Al.
My guess is that the Celtics will not resign Marcus Smart when his contract is up a year from now. Instead, the Celtics will spend that money to resign Theis and Timelord.
Thompson has been average at best. Grant Williams is officially a bust.
Having Horford as one of the 3 bigs gives Brad better options. You can play any of the 2-man Hortford/Theis/Timelord options together. Whereas, Thompson and Timelord together doesn’t work because neither can space the floor.
When Horford left, no bridges were burned. Cs fans would be happy to have him back. Although, some fans might lose their minds over Smart being gone.
Horford is a ball-mover. Not a ball-stopper. He’s still a good player. He can still make 3s. His contract doesn’t kill them long-term.
Celtics would be banking on either Romeo or Nesmith to pan out.
More topics. What to do about Kemba? I think you need to move Kemba to the bench as the 6th man. He’s not playing well enough to justify taking the ball out of the Jays’ hands.
Starting lineup of Tatum, Brown, Horford, Prichard, and either Theis/Williams/Romeo would be better both offensively and defensively. Kemba could provide punch off the bench. Muscala would be an upgrade over Semi. Nesmith would round out 9-man rotation. Semi would be 10th man. Carsen Edward could play in a pinch.
Cs would still have their trade exception (and, an open roster spot). I have no idea what they’re going to do with it. If they use it acquire a big long-term contract, they’re likely to have future luxury tax issues. I think they’re better off with a half-season rental (someone like Thad Young) or not using the exception at all.
Lousy year so far, but still salvageable.
